any one here a member of Atheist Nexus?

I joined atheist nexus some weeks ago. On my first post I was attacked for being too radical; not tolerant enough; not willing to meet religionists half way; and according to a couple of self appointed spokesmen for the group, I was the odd ball among their entire 10,000 membership because of my militant anti-theist positions.

I've witnessed there atheists who'd like to attend an "atheist church" (????) because it would make theists accept them better, be less threatened. Others who say if you don't accpet everyones beliefs and give them full respect you are intolerant.

This has been a real eye opener for me. I had no idea there were uncle tom atheists, some of whom are so mild as to distain spelling the word "Xtian" because it is demeaning and antagonistic.

I must have been hanging in the wrong places all these years to suddenly find out there are atheists like this. Evidently, I'm villified by some of them as a kind of wild eyed radical because I am an activist against extremist fundamentalist intrusions into our lives and freedoms, et al.
Have any of you seen this before? Is it specific to Atheist Nexus, or more widespread?

Yeah so I went there and omfg. These people are just going with the flow of things. I actually saw a post where someone asked what atheist books do you guys worship? Then he said he wanted whatever books evolution, science of homosexuality, biography of Penn, and a book on the flying spaghetti monster.

The worst part is that no one else said a word to him. They went with it. WTF is wrong with these people?

I'm a member, i seldom go there, not because they're a bunch of apathetics, but because they rarely talk about anything interesting...which is probably a side-effect from the place being populated by pussies

TBH i encounter this "lame" version of Atheism more often than not, and i usually attribute it to where i live (being england) where religiosity doesn't tend to affect the average person. Not to say that religion isn't screwing with my country, but its not so blatantly in your face that it can't be ignored or just seen as a "Fringe" thing or "Extreme minority".

and i find this version of atheism rather annoying, because apathy get's us nowhere. It's also hard enough trying to counter religiosity WITHOUT non-religious people telling me to be more apathetic, like them.

"Naive" is another word i'd use as a descriptor.

One thing to remember about Atheist Nexus: they are not an organization in-and-of themselves. They are more like a webring and their membership requirements are very loose. It's probably inevitable that you'll run into some accomodationist pussbags. I also suspect there is a heaping helping of trolling going down too.

Still hump- I am surprised that you had such an experience right off the bat. The more public face of some of their groups are just as anti-theist as the ACA/AE/NP crowd. The Atheist News and Chariots of Iron podcast and groups for example.

Haha...I just went over there and lurked a few threads you guys were posting in...that Don guy is a fucktard. Is he seriously putting forward the idea that simply by making the word choice "lack of belief in gods" instead of "absence of belief in gods" that we're pandering to theist claims about atheists "pining for the love of god that they know in their hearts really exists" just because one of the dictionary definitions of "lack" implies desire? Argument from dictionary dogma.

In all, A|N has members that put out some good podcasts and the community seems pretty broad. Plenty of knuckleheads, but also plenty of clear thinkers. And what fun would only one type be anyway?

Lol theres always a few in the bunch. Some of these people don't seem as ... clear minded as the few regulars around here . I'm actually having an okay time arguing with these people (1 in particular). They've yet to name call me for my views. And I've been dropping all sorts of names (I want to piss off the ones who don't like "name dropping") However its not as bad as I thought ... at least not yet.

I can accept apathetic atheists, non-activists. But I'll be damned if I'll extend respect and civility to a black who opposed Martin Luther King's activism; who would call 1930' Jewish accomodation of the Nazi party just good politics; or who would call me an asshole for my activism against religious intrusion into a Free and progressive America.

It seems about 1/3rd of the membership there are those appeasers .
It disgusts me.
