I thought the email about the web designer concerned about designing a Christian website mirrored this little story a bit. Should anyone be outraged by one story or the other, or are they simply lost business opportunities?

In the U.S. this practice is simply illegal. The print shop is a place of public accommodation and may not discriminate based on religion.
The web designer may be in a different situation in that contract work can be different. I would assume that its the same (and in principle, it is) but can't say for certain.
